How to choose a pink lip color.

This time of year I always want to wear a pink lip, however what color to choose? My guide is usually skin tone when choosing a color. The lighter the skintone the lighter you can go on the pink. Deeper pinks and rose tones look better on deeper skin tones. Beware of going powder pink if you are a deeper skin tone, the results can be a bit Nicki Minaj if you know what I mean….

My favorite pinks: Graftobian “Soft Cherry” for medium skin tones, and “Classic Rose” for light. For deeper tones, Dior’s Addict Lipstick in “Plum”. For gloss, can’t beat MAC’s “Nymphette”.

Camera Ready Makeup 2

My work isn’t always about beauty. Like I spoke of in the “Camera Ready” makeup post, sometimes it is about making someone look normal for camera. This job has had so much exposure and is all over the city. I even saw it on the side of a DART bus last week. I think I did a really great job.

The variety is what keeps it exciting for me.

Runway Look with Make Up For Ever

Last week I had the privilege of working with a team of my students on a runway show. As makeup director I created the looks based on the direction provided to me by the producer and then translated them to actual product and “go-by’s” for my team. Using Makeup Training Academy students was great. They were so excited and had never been backstage at a show, or worked one. They had a good time.

I partnered with Make Up For Ever who sponsored my team for the show. We did the entire color look with their Aqua Creams. Thank you MUFE!

Using #21 on the lid, a beautiful vibrant blue and #12 in the crease which is a metallic bronze. The cheeks were #9 a soft coral which was buffed into the cheek and used on the lips with clear gloss. The #9 is especially beautiful for spring and I loved that we were able to use it on the cheeks and lips. We bumped it up to a brighter orange #10 for deep skin-tones. Here was our color board:

Camera-Ready Makeup

I recently had two very different jobs that emphasized why I think of makeup artistry as a craft. One was a video of an elected state official and the other was a photo-shoot with a talented vocalist. They both required makeup that worked on camera, however each was quite different in look and how I approached it.

The video was about making a man look “normal” for an HD camera, hence the term camera-ready makeup. To me “camera-ready” doesn’t necessarily require a lot of makeup more than it requires understanding what a camera is going to see and what to put where. I did not want this man to look as if he had makeup on however I had to use makeup on him so that he looked like a regular person. In HD I think a big challenge for us is shine. Shine is the reflection of light off of someones face, and shine in high-def can look very odd, like a bright “spot”. Because the camera sees shine that we don’t see with the naked eye, it is important to pay attention in application.

The vocalist was lovely and my job was to follow the parameters set up by the art director and my own creative eye to get her looking beautiful for a fashion shoot. I emphasized what I thought was lovely about her face and shaped her face for the camera. I played with shimmer and color, texture and light and she simply glowed. The makeup needed to show on camera and helped to create the “feel” for the shoot.

These variations from job to job are one of the things that keeps me challenged and interested. Our job as makeup artists really is to tell the camera what is important and what is not. Sometimes we decide what that is and sometimes the job tells us. Sometimes we color and play, sometimes we are technical and specific.
